Symbian To Be Made Open Source

Symbian to be made Open Source - s60pro.blogspot.com
Today Symbian Foundation announced a shared vision for an unparalleled open mobile software platform. Now whether this decision has been taken so as to withstand its leading position as other's like Google's Android is open source.

This platform will unite Symbian OS, S60, UIQ and MOAP(S) to create the most proven, open and complete mobile software platform building on the market leading operating system with over 200 million devices already shipped; The platform will be available royalty-free from an open independent foundation, the Symbian Foundation.

The Symbian Foundation will unite:

•Symbian OS
•S60
•UIQ
•MOAP(S)

These software assets are to be contributed to the foundation by Fujitsu, Motorola, Nokia, NTT DOCOMO, and Sony Ericsson along with related tools and documentation. On launch of the foundation, which is expected in the first half of 2009, all assets will be available separately under the foundation’s royalty-free license. A new platform is to be formed from Symbian OS and S60, with UIQ and MOAP(S) technologies integrated, and will offer one UI framework.

The platform will offer device manufacturers the means to build a complete mobile phone, and to differentiate their devices through tailoring of the user experience and by offering their own applications and services. Device manufacturers will thus be able to create unique devices efficiently, based on a consistent and common platform. This consistency will be the fuel the whole ecosystem and the accelerant for innovation.

The platform offers both exciting possibilities for the future but also will offer compatibility to the past - to Symbian version 9 and S60 3rd edition. This secures existing investments in the platform, in services and in applications. It means you can start developing today for the future, using the tools available today; reaching a huge existing market with compatibility guaranteed.

The unified platform will be available under the foundation’s royalty-free license. The first release is expected to be available during 2009.
