S60 Pro - S60 News,Tips and Tricks

As most of us are aware with the beta release of QT for Symbian S60, the plans were clear that S60 and Avkon UI components will be phased out soon. Recently there has been many links and blog posts discussing the same. In fact some has even declared that S60 Avkon will be dead.

However, I feel it will take some time and there will be a transition from Avkon to QT UI Toolkit before S60 Avkon UI is completely abandoned. Also it is said that Symbian 4 will have a binary break and will have a completely different UI framework called Orbit. It has yet not been finalised whether Orbit and S60 will co exists as it depends upon the decision taken by Symbian Foundation and Device Manufacturers.The binary break might not effect the low level engines (not making use of S60 Avkon UI) .

This move is expected to be effective from around mid 2010 with Symbian 4.

Mobile Meeting Made Simple - Nokia Easy Meet

Nokia Beta Labs has recently demoed a beta version of Nokia Easy Meet. It is said to be an intuitive mobile collaboration tool that allows for real time sharing of contents from PC (does not work in IE now) and Mobile as well.

The usage is very simple you don't have to install any application instead you just have to type in the url and start making use of the service. You setup a username and right away start scheduling your meetings or even creating ad hoc meetings.

Once you create a meeting, the service sends out an email and/or SMS to each participant. With just one click, each participant can join the meeting and view the content shared by the host. Content can come directly from the host’s device or from remote servers (via OVI Files).

One feature I liked is that device users can see, interact with, and share content directly on or from the device. By providing complete functionality to mobile devices, mobile participants aren’t at a disadvantage in the meeting setting.

Nokia E75 - Email with Ease

Nokia India has launched a new website for promoting Nokia E75 in India. The web site is called Email with Ease and focuses on promoting the functions of the Qwerty Beast. The flash site also has a forum where users can interact with other E75 users.

It has very nice video demos on how to use the features. It clearly explains how to view attachments, view personal and business emails.

Nokia Photo Browser for S60 5th Edition

Nokia has released a new Beta version of Nokia Photo Browser for its new touch enabled models n97 and Nokia 5800. The software provides a good UI for browsing images stored in your phone. It has face detection capability and also comes with a “MagGlass” magnifier. The MagGlass magnifier is said to make image zooming to feel and look more real and analog.

I have just as of now watched the Youtube video of the application. Can't really say if it would give very smooth effects, they might optimise it once its ready to be out from beta. Chances are that it might come preinstalled on Nokia N97 devices tobe launched later this year in June.

And I stongly feel such applications should be made available and people would be expecting more. However, the question still remains is this innovation - as you can see the effects are very much similar to Cooliris extension for firefox. I believe Nokia can and should bring out something unique to its platform. Also it would be great if they start exposing these effects and oethr features to developers as API. So that more and more quality application can be build upon this new platform.

Anyways, I am eager to try it out, but will have to wait till they start supporting other 3rd edition devices. They will soon release a version to support other 3rd edition phones. The current release is a prototype application and not a release version. You can download the software from here.

An example game of Solitaire has been released for the S60 5th Edition platform- “This C++ example application demonstrates a fully touch-optimised application using various touch UI features of S60 5th Edition with direct manipulation. Besides tapping the cards, the user can drag and drop them using a finger or the stylus.

The application demonstrates handling pointer events of custom made UI controls. Also, tactile feedback using the Touch Feedback API is received. Double buffering is used to draw on the screen to avoid flickering. By default, the cards are implemented as Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) icons, but the example also provides an option to draw them using methods of the graphics context class CWindowGc. In the updated version, major drawing optimisation has been done.

Found this trick on some forum. Try it out.

1. Put your phone on normal mode. (NOT in the music mode).

2. Turn on phone autolock period to user defined and put 1 minute

menu>settings>>phone settings>general>security>phone and sim card>phone autolock period>user defined> 1 minute

default lock code is 12345

3. Now twist your phone to music mode and wait 1 minute

4. You'll notice after one minute that the phone is locked.

5. Now twist your phone to normal mode and write the unlock code.

Phone is unlocked and you can use the music buttons behind your phone (press play)..
and also you can use number pad in front of your phone.

If you want to have your T9 Dictionary Reset to the factory default one, in your Symbian Mobile Phone, follow the below mentioned instructions.

Install any third party file browser like Y-Browser on your device. Now to reset your T9 Dictionary without resetting your phone, go to C://Predic using this third party browser as built in file managers won't allow access to this folder. Once in that folder delete the .dat files stored in that folder. Here you go you have successfully reset your T9 .

Note in some versions of SDK these phonetic symbols cannot be displayed for the time being. The very reason is that they are not included in the font library. As such, even you input the correct unicodes, however they are still not displayable.

Universal Phone Charger Expected by 2012

With the backing from 17 mobile operators and device manufacturers, the GSM association has announced to create a Universal Phone Charger by 1st January 2112. This announcement was made at the Mobile World Congress 2009 in Barcelona.

The so-called universal charging solution (UCS) initiative, is billed chiefly as a green project, as the charger will be designed to be energy-efficient. The GSMA says the UCS would result in an estimated 50% reduction in standby energy consumption, and would potentially eliminate up to 51,000 tonnes of duplicate chargers.

Tip: Force gc Draw commands to show up in Emulator Debug

Here is a very excellent tip for debugging any symbian application which has gc Draw funtions.

Put iEikonEnv->WsSession().SetAutoFlush(ETrue) in the ConstructL() function of your AppUi.

This will force the gc commands to show up in the emulator immediately, rather than when the window server client buffer is flushed next.

Note: Don't forget to remove it in your release build.

Version 4.0 of Share Online is now available for download from Nokia Beta Labs. With this application you can share your pictures and videos on Ovi directly from your phone. You can also keep track of the latest comments and pictures sent by your friends. Share Online also works with several other image sharing services (eg. Flickr).

Here are some of the new things that you will notice in Share Online 4.0 beta:

Improved upload/download experience. You don’t need to wait for your photos to be uploaded before uploading the next one. You can refresh your feeds, add comments, or even exit the application while the uploading is still in progress.
Outbox. You can see a list of pending uploads, as well as review, cancel or retry specific uploads. You can also use the Outbox to keep track of which photos and videos you have already uploaded.
Economic sharing. If you don’t have an affordable data plan, you can disable the use of cellular data in the Share Online settings, and queue your photos and videos to be uploaded as soon as a free WLAN connection is available. In addition, there are data counters available, in case you want to keep track of your cellular data usage.
Active standby indicators. Your outbox info is visible and accessible in your active standby screen. If you prefer, you can also remove these indicators.

The new features in Share Online 4.0 make use of technical enablers present only in the very latest versions of S60. The beta is available initially only to a very limited number of devices: N96, 6220 Classic, 6210 Navigator and 5320 XpressMusic.

Solve Symbian System Error - 1001

Well if you also happen to receive System Error -1001. Then probably it might be due to any missing .mbm file as it happened in my case.

The error codes in the range of -1000 to -1003 is allocated to Bafl (can be found in basched.h).

LiPS and LiMO Join Forces Together

In a recent announcement LiPS (Linux Phone Standards) and LiMO announced that they will be merging together to form a stronger team to push the mobile Linux.

“LiPS Forum is proud of our standardization efforts, development activities and other achievements of the last three years,” commented Haila Wang, LiPS Forum president and CTO Orange Labs, Beijing. “Today, our membership agrees that LiPS’ greatest impact can be realized by adding our members’ expertise and resources to LiMo Foundation. Together, the member companies can better strive for a unified and ubiquitous Linux-based mobile platform”.

The competition in the Mobile Space seems to be heated up as Nokia announced to purchase Symbian and Make it open source. LiMo Foundation is expected to beat Android in getting their handsets to market, with the first wave expected within a few months.

Flash Lite to be Integrated with BREW

Qualcomm and Adobe have announced a partnership to integrate Adobe Flash directly into the BREW Mobile Platform.

Stephen Jackson, President and CEO of Smashing Ideas, Inc., the largest developer of flash-based content in the US, had this to say:

How to get binary data in a _LIT?

The _LIT macros just use the sizeof() operator to find the amount of data, so you can use the \xHHH escape sequences to put binary data into a _LIT.

You would need to worry about byte-ordering issues when using _LIT or _LIT16 (rather than _LIT8), since \x27 in a Unicode string actually means 0x0027, and on Symbian OS will be stored as 0x27 followed by 0x00 at the next address.

So, if you are prepared to write something like:

N95-3 (US) gets firmware upgrade to 20.02.011

The N95-3 NA firmware upgrade 20.02.011 is now available. Flash Lite 3 and the Web Run time are included.

Flash Lite 3 allows for the viewing of Flash Video (e.g. YouTube). WRT allows you to install and use WRT widgets. Demand Paging offers improvements both in start-up time, application speed and memory usage. Other peformance updates include speedier image capture by the camera.

The updated firmware can be downloaded and installed via Nokia Software Updater which is available as part of recent version of PC Suite.
